Spoiler Alert: It's great. Using memes in chat is S-tier. The reaction GIF economy is thriving. All the things. Discord absolutely understands internet culture, and after spending more time with it, I can see why so many communities call it home. That said, I still feel like I'm standing outside the club looking in. I think it's less about my age and more about what I expect from a platform. Discord really wants me to already be invested in a niche game, hobby, or community. Which I can be, but it's built around conversations that are already happening, and joining one can feel a bit like walking into a party where everyone already knows each other.
I joined the following servers to kind of test out and get the feel for: Bottle Shocks (wine talk), Supergiant Games (game developers of one of my favorite indie game series, Hades and Hades II), Ghost of Yotei (still haven't bought this game but wanted to observe conversation), and Babish's Culinary Universe (based on the chef's YouTube channel). I also have some Discord servers I made as a chat hub when my coworkers and I dove back into Stardew Valley. That was back in 2023, and it really felt like I was having a LAN party that wasn't a LAN party. The chat features on the site, and Discord's mobile capability and voice chat made it all pretty seamless.
Still though, Reddit feels different. If I want to learn about wine, I can visit r/wine and immediately browse by the most popular posts, search years of archived discussions, or dive into resources that have naturally risen to the top. The platform feels organized around knowledge. Discord feels organized around the chat and the people being more 'chronically' online. That's not a criticism—it just serves a different purpose. If Reddit is the library where I can quietly browse shelves, Discord is the student union where everyone is already halfway through a conversation. I'll spend the weekend in the student union, revisiting some platform and mobile games and see if my chat is constantly blowing up. My social meter will be at a all-time high, I anticipate.... it brings me back to the ol' Xbox Live days.
Okay, so I went and checked Discord, but then I quickly decided I was not brave enough to investigate it further. It's architecture is so different! However, I like your similes. I, too, was comparing Discord with Reddit and decided that Reddit was more of an affinity space for me. By now, I feel quite at home there. I do not think that I would ever be able to understand Discord.
